RasterLogs
The Office of Geological Survey has converted 57,800 paper wire-line logs to digital files. The resulting digital files are called RasterLogs (digital ‘Raster' files of the geophysical ‘Logs'). The digital files are in an ‘industry standard' TIF format.
Even though this is one of the most complete sets of records for Michigan, we know it is not complete. For a variety of reasons some records were not available for conversion. If you have any records that will add to this collection and are willing to share them, the OGS will scan the files and return the source documents and the associated digital files.
In a collection of this size and complexity there are inadvertent errors and omissions. Please report problems or discrepancies you encounter. Your help is appreciated. Your feedback will help improve the quality of the collection.
Digital Oil and Gas Permit Well Files
Oil and Gas Permit Well Files (PWF) are the documents that are generated over the course of the life of a well - from application to plugging. The content of the file depends on the history and activities at the site. Currently the files for permits 1 to 53,999 are available in a multi-page TIF format.
To get a complete set of Digital Records
To get a set of all of the available digital files, send an external USB 2.0 hard disk with at least 150 GB of available space and the requisite connection cables and power supply (if needed). When the hard disk is received, a set of files will be copied and the hard drive and it will be return to the address provided.
Please send an email to wilsons15@michigan.govor include a business card with an email address on it so you (and/or others) can be notified about updates by email.
Return shipping (UPS, FedEx, etc) is the responsibility of the party sending the disk drive. If return shipping is not provided, the unit is sent by US Mail. US Mail does not provide tracking and can take weeks to arrive. There are no other costs or fees associated with acquiring these files.
The USB hard disk drive should be sent to:

Individual well files.
If you want a single well file and the permit is lower than 54000 we can email you the file in pdf format. Email us with your request and we will send you one email back for each permit you requested.
For records that have not been converted to digital (permits 54000 and above) please make a Freedom of Information Act ( FOIA) request for the materials you need. Depending on the files size this may involve copying and billed. FOIA request should be sent to:

Viewing TIF Files
The digital Permit Well Files and RasterLogs are provided as TIF files. In order to view and print them you might need some additional software. There are sites on the internet from which you can download software. Some of the software is free or evaluated before you buy it.
The Office of Geological Survey has tested several products and has found that either
XnView ( www.xnview.com- third party site ) or
IrfanView ( www.irfanview.com)
would likely meet most, if not all, of your needs. Both are free downloads.
