Respiratory Care Week

Whereas, Lung diseases, known collectively as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and costs the economy an estimated $31.9 billion annually; and,

Whereas, The goal of Respiratory Care Week is to recognize and thank respiratory care professionals, promote respiratory health, increase awareness of lung health issues in all environments and to educate and encourage prospective students about career opportunities and growth of the profession; and,

Whereas, Millions of Michigan's residents suffer from a type of lung disease, which is why respiratory therapists are dedicated to providing information and administrating tests to prevent or slow the spread of lung disease; and,

Whereas, During the week of October 25, 2009, respiratory therapists, pulmonologists, health care advocates, and other professionals from around the world will be raising awareness of respiratory health issues through special screenings and other activities;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of October 25, 2009, Respiratory Care Week in Michigan.  I encourage all residents of this state to focus on increasing public awareness on the importance of early detection of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
