Magic Week

Whereas, National Magic Week recognizes and promotes the art of magic; and,

Whereas, The roots of National Magic Week go back over 80 years.  Then known as Houdini Day, it recognized master of illusions, Harry Houdini, who wowed audiences with his interpretation of magic; and,

Whereas, In observance of this week, members of the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians generously offer their time and talents for charitable purposes by providing entertainment for people with disabilities and people who would otherwise have difficulty getting to a theater to watch a live performance; and,

Whereas, Dedicated to elevating the art of magic, the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians have established an endowment fund, which provides educational and humanitarian assistance to its members; and,

Whereas, For over 70 years, Colon, Michigan, has been proud to be called the magic capital of the world and has used its title to encourage young people to develop self-esteem through the performance of magic;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of October 24, 2009, Magic Week in Michigan. I encourage all residents of this state to observe this week by attending a magic show or performing a little magic on their own.
