Lt. Gov. John D. Cherry Jr. came to Bay City to talk about tourism on Tuesday, and brought some money to back it up.
Cherry announced an $806,469 enhancement grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation to be used by city officials for streetscape improvements on Center Avenue from Johnson Street to Livingston Avenue.

There is concern in some circles that the Great Lakes Compact, the anti-diversion pact sent to Congress last week after Michigan was the last state to approve it, might fail on Capitol Hill because thirsty states have more clout than the Lakes states.
Lt. Gov. John Cherry, chairman of the Great Lakes Commission, is not in that circle -- especially if Congress votes before the next census costs Rust Belt states even more seats.

$3.4 million cleanup to restore Muskegon Lake shoreline

A three year, $3.4 million plan to restore natural features along five miles of the lake's southern shoreline was announced Friday by the Great Lakes Commission and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Friday. The project area extends from the mouth of the Muskegon River to the Muskegon Lake Channel into Lake Michigan.

Make compact just a start for healthier lakes

The compact commits the eight Great Lakes states to consider as a group requests for bulk diversions of water, which will lead to rejection of the requests in practically all instances. Only counties that straddle the edge of the Great Lakes basin have even a prayer of being considered. Ontario and Quebec have set similar standards.

Earth Voyager event promotes healthy lakes

The Canadian and U.S. governments are striking out while municipalities are rounding third when it comes to paying for Great Lakes infrastructure, says a report released Wednesday.
The Great Lakes Commission and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative report suggests that towns and cities on both sides of the border spend about US$15 billion a year on water quality management and ecosystem protection.
