The City of Cadillac is accepting applications for Seasonal Community Policing Officers. Candidates must be either certified or certifiable with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) by May 14, 2010. Term of employment will be from late May to mid September 2010. Comments:  The Grand Valley State University Department of Public Safety is creating an eligibility list for the position of police officer on the Allendale campus.  Applications for the list are being accepted for any open assignments in the future.  Currently there are no openings.  Individuals interested in this position may apply for the list online.  Grand Valley State University is an affirmative action equal opportunity institution. 

Required Qualifications:

Associates degree and/or equivalent experience.  Currently licensable by completion of MCOLES basic training and passing licensing examination.  Valid State of Michigan driver's license with an acceptable traffic record.  No criminal record which will question credibility or public trust expected of an officer.  Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation.  Physical, mental and emotional ability to execute duties.  Available to work any shift.  Knowledge of current laws, standards and police procedures.  Ability to learn and operate all communication equipment.  Ability to maintain a satisfactory work performance and attendance record. 

Responsibilities:

This is a uniformed and armed police position charged with enforcing state/local laws and the rules of the university.  Patrols the campus in a marked unit.  Responds to emergency calls for service.  Arrest and issue citations as necessary.  Provide back up assistance when dispatched.  Provide first aid, scene control and/or coordination between backup units, ambulance and hospitals.  Respond to and investigate complaints as received or as department requires.  Testify at court and subsequent hearings.  Serve subpoenas and warrants as requested.  Revise and update all complaint reports and perform further actions as appropriate.  Keep supervisor informed of progress.  Provide surveillance of campus environment and report any unusual and/or unsafe conditions.  Responsible for the safety and protection of the campus community, its personnel and property.  Provide parking and crowd control at campus events.  Act as a liaison between campus community and area law enforcement agencies.  Responsible for care and maintenance of all equipment issued by the department.  Willingness to exhibit proper attitude and demeanor to establish and maintain good public relations.   Attend in-service training programs.  Perform other similar and related duties as directed by supervisor.

COMMENTS: Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, these positions perform law enforcement functions on the grounds and around the perimeters of all Kalamazoo Valley Community College sites.  Duties include patrolling campus locations and surrounding streets enforcing local and state laws and parking regulations; providing service functions including directing traffic and assistance to students and staff; responding to emergency situations of accidental, medical, industrial and criminal nature and taking appropriate action as needed.  Additional responsibilities include investigating criminal and non-criminal incident complaints received from the college community, writing reports involving incidents for presentation to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office and/or the College's ombudsman; working with students and staff on crime prevention issues; developing and presenting related training as appropriate and other related tasks.

Performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property throughout the county. Maintains law and order; prevents crime; deals with complaints; and renders emergency assistance to the public as a uniformed officer and may serve civil papers. While work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and standard methods and practices and general supervision is received from a superior officer, this employee is frequently required to exercise initiative and independent judgment under emergency conditions. The work may involve an element of personal danger. Position is scheduled for 1,000 hours per year or less.

Requires high school graduation, M.C.O.L.E.S. Certified. Licensed as paramedic preferred. Able to pass rigid physical examination and thorough background investigation. Police experience preferred.
