Cattle and Bison

Dairy and/or Breeding (Includes Beef-type)



  1. All cattle imported into Michigan shall be accompanied by an interstate health certificate or certificate of veterinary inspection, or if consigned directly to slaughter, by an owner-shipper statement or sales invoice.

    Each animal must be individually uniquely identified by an USDA-approved ear tag, tattoo, brand or registration number (official breed registry).

  2. All female cattle over 19 months of age that are official calfhood vaccinates, female cattle over six months of age that are not official calfhood vaccinates, and bulls over six months of age must meet one of the following:
    1. Originate directly from a certified brucellosis-free herd, or
    2. Originate directly from a state that has maintained, for the previous six consecutive years prior to importation, certified brucellosis class free state status, or
    3. Test negative to an official brucellosis test within 30 days prior to importation.
    4. If female dairy or breeding cattle over 19 months of age or bulls over 6 months of age are imported from states classified brucellosis B or C, refer to program manager.

  3. All cattle must originate from a herd that has had a negative whole herd test within the preceding 12 months AND have received an official negative tuberculosis test within 60 days prior to importation, or originate directly from a tuberculosis accredited-free herd, or originate directly from an accredited tuberculosis-free state or originate directly from an accredited tuberculosis-free zone.

  4. Female cattle imported into Michigan for embryo transplant must meet the requirements listed above.


Feeder Cattle

  1. All feeder cattle imported into Michigan must be accompanied by an offical interstate health certificate or official certificate of veterinary inspection.

    1. Feeder heifers under 20 months of age must be individually identified by an official USDA ear tag*. Individual identification must be recorded on the interstate health certificate.

      *Note: Feeder heifers may be identified by an USDA official back tag recorded on the health certificate. Within ten days of arrival, official USDA silver ear tags shall be placed in one ear. These silver tag numbers are to be recorded on the importing health certificate and a copy sent to the State Veterinarian's Office withint ten days after importation of the cattle.

    2. Feeder heifers over 20 months of age must meet the requirements for dairy and/or breeding cattle.

  2. Feeder cattle shall be kept segregated from native dairy or breeding cattle at the Michigan destination until slaughter.
