Mission: State and local Safe Kids Coalitions will create an environment where children 14 and under are free from accidental injury. This will be accomplished through community partnerships, advocacy of best practices, public awareness, distribution of safety equipment, and education and training on the proper use of safety devices.
Safe Kids Michigan is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental injury, the leading cause of death and injury for children. Safe Kids Michigan was founded in 1995 and is led by the Michigan Department of Community Health.
Major areas of focus include child passenger safety, pedestrian and wheeled activities (bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, scooters), fires/burns, poisonings, falls, and drowning.
As a state coalition of Safe Kids Worldwide, Safe Kids Michigan strives to achieve its mission through:
- Development and support of new Safe Kids chapters and coalitions
- Assisting in development, implementation and evaluation of community based childhood accidental injury prevention programs
- Statewide dissemination of injury prevention information to children, caregivers, organizations, schools, and community groups
- Building and sustaining a multi-faceted coalition comprised of statewide agencies, organizations and individuals dedicated to reducing accidental injuries
State and local Safe Kids programs and events are supported by grants from Safe Kids Worldwide, corporations, state and federal government, and charitable foundations.
