Substance Abuse Prevention Dollars and Cents: A Cost-Benefit Analysis
Studies have shown the annual cost of substance abuse to the nation to be $510.8 billion. Among national estimates for the costs of 33 diseases and conditions, alcohol ranked second, tobacco ranked sixth, and drug disorders ranked seventh. This federal report, released in 2009, provides the best estimate of the magnitude of the cost to society from substance abuse, and reveals the potential savings and benefits gained through implementing effective prevention programs.
