MDOT's M-86 bridge repair in Colon to wrap up on time

Contact:  Julie Hurley 269-208-7829
Agency: Transportation

August 26, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will complete work on time on a $2 million bridge reconstruction project on M-86 in Colon in St. Joseph County on Friday, Aug. 29.

Work included reconstructing and widening the M-86 bridge over Swan Creek by one lane. MDOT also rehabilitated and widened the M-86 bridge deck over Mill Race by one lane.

"MDOT would like to thank the residents and motorists in Colon for their continued patience while we replaced these 75-year-old bridges," said Pete Pfeiffer, manager of MDOT's Transportation Service Center (TSC) in Kalamazoo. "The old M-86 bridge over Swan Creek was one of the poorest rated state bridges in southwest Michigan. Now motorists traveling along M-86 and the residents of Colon will have a safe bridge that will last for generations to come."

In addition to the bridge work, the roadway approaches to each bridge were reconstructed and widened. The storm sewer and water main within the project limits also were reconstructed.
