BACKGROUND: A proposal to link the museum to US-41 was first proposed nearly 20 years ago, though funding for the project was not identified until recently. The current access drive is a local county road, sometimes difficult to find and difficult to access for large recreational vehicles. This project is funded by the Michigan Institutional Roads program, a competitive grant program that commits $750,000 annually to build, improve and maintain roads to Michigan institutions such as colleges, universities and prisons. This is the first time the funding has been used for a state museum facility. Construction of this $667,000 project, which includes a new 20-space parking lot, will begin this fall and be completed in the spring of 2009.
