MDOT to replace US-131 bridge over Manistee River beginning early September

Contact:  Bob Felt, MDOT Office of Communications, 989-619-7963
Agency: Transportation

September 1, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will invest approximately $3 million to replace the US-131 bridge over the Manistee River in Wexford County beginning as early as Tuesday, Sept. 8. The bridge is expected to reopen by early next summer.

"The bridge was built back in the 1950s and is in need of replacement. We're starting the work now and carrying on through the winter in order to have it ready for local residents and tourists next summer," said Rick Liptak, manager of MDOT's Cadillac Transportation Service Center. "The new bridge will have wider shoulders that will create a safer environment for motorists traveling across it."

For safety reasons, crews will completely close the bridge. US-131 traffic traveling between Cadillac and Kalkaska will be detoured using M-55, M-66, M-72, and US-131. US-131 traffic traveling between Cadillac and Traverse City should use M-115 and M-37.

"Motorists should plan on adding extra time to their trips for the next several months," Liptak added.
