National Family Caregiver Month is organized each November by the National Family Caregivers Association and is a designated time every year to thank, support, educate and empower family caregivers. Caregivers not only provide a badly needed service for their family member, but also for society. With the skyrocketing costs of health care, keeping someone in their home can save thousands of dollars.
According to National Caregiver Associations, the economic value of the services family caregivers provide for "free" is estimated to represent $375 billion a year in the United States. In Michigan, during 2008 a total of 8,262 caregivers were supported by 838,837 hours of adult day care, respite care, counseling services, and supplemental care. Also, 77,858 home delivered meals as a form of respite care for caregivers and their care recipients were served. The Caregiver's Handbook is a companion resource to "Caring for Your Parents." The handook provides information on a wide range of topics, including finances, health care, and caring for caregiver.
"Speak Up" Initiatives. The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services launched a national campaign to urge patients to take a role in preventing health care errors by being active, involved, and informed participants on the health care team.
National Alliance for Caregiving established in 1996, is a non-profit coalition of national organizations focusing on issues of family caregiving.
