Using this toolkit as a guide to becoming elder friendly, communities can even apply for "Community for a Lifetime" designation and be recognized for their efforts!
This toolkit contains useful information on assessing community assets, and it offers suggestions on improvements that will help older people remain as contributing members of their communities. You'll examine such things as walkability, access to health care, housing, transportation, safety and much, much more, all in an effort to strengthen what your community has to offer its older citizens.
And why is all of this important, you ask? It's important because the baby boom generation has arrived--the first of the boomers has already turned 60, and there are a lot of them. Become a progressive community by planning ahead for this aging demographic. And know that an elder friendly community is ultimately one that is responsive to people of all ages.
