What is the TISM Program?
Under the leadership of the Employee Service Program, a certified Traumatic Incident Stress Management team provides assessment and interventions to assist employees in the aftermath of traumatic incidents. The team consists of fully trained mental health professionals and departmental peers.
A traumatic incident is sudden, unexpected and short in duration. Events such as violence, suicide, homicide, accidental death or serious injury at the workplace are examples of such events.
Traumatic Incident Stress is the normal reaction of individuals to an abnormal situation. At such times, our usual coping mechanisms are overloaded. We feel overwhelmed and may experience intense physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms. Without intervention, these symptoms may be prolonged and impair function and impact work performance.
Traumatic Incident Services include consultations, individual interventions, on-site support, group services such as defusing or debriefing sessions and follow-up assistance. Services are designed to validate and normalize acute stress reactions, accelerate recovery and reduce the risk of long-term effects.
TISM Services are NOT a form of therapy, nor an organizational critique or investigation!
Any employee who has been exposed to a traumatic event is encouraged to use this service.
