| Turn lane signs, pavement markings to be added to Iron River center left-turn lane

July 3, 2008 -- To assist with the adjustment of the new center left-turn lane on US-2 in Iron River, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will add additional signs and pavement markings.
The configuration of solid yellow/broken yellow lane lines on each side of the two-way left-turn lane can be used by traffic in either direction as part of a left-turn maneuver. Though the edges of the turn lane are marked with a solid yellow line, motorists are permitted to cross into the turn lane to make left turns. Left turns are not permitted from the through-traffic lane. Vehicles are not permitted to use the center lane for passing or travel, except to make left turns.
To assist motorists, MDOT will add pavement markings within the turn lane, and a sign over the US-2/M-189 intersection.
To promote safety and calm traffic, Iron River partnered with MDOT to introduce a trial four- to three-lane conversion on US-2 through the community. In June, the new markings were placed designating one lane of travel in each direction, with a center left-turn lane. This lane conversion is designed to allow motorists to make left turns more easily, while allowing through-traffic to flow smoothly.
