Title Histories

Ordering a title history
Vehicle title and registration histories are purchased through the Record Lookup Unit.  If you do not have a Record Lookup account with the Department of State, you must complete a record request form for each title history.  Use form BDVR-153 when requesting your own record and form BDVR-154 when requesting another person's record.  Each form contains a list of permissible reasons for requesting the information.  Customers requesting another person's title or registration history who do not have a permissible use will receive a record with all personal information redacted.

Note:  Records requested by mail, fax or telephone are mailed and should arrive within three weeks but may require as much as six weeks to process.

Make sure to include the license plate number, registration number or vehicle identification number with your request.

Fees
Each title transaction requested is $7.  For title histories with multiple transactions (for example, the vehicle changed owners several times), you will be charged $7 for each title transfer on record.  An invoice for the balance owed will be sent to you.

A certified copy of a driving or vehicle record is available for $8.

Same-day service
Pay by cash, check, Discover or MasterCard.  Note:  Visa is also accepted at the Secretary of State Secondary Complex at 7064 Crowner Drive in Lansing.

Same-day service is available for customers requesting their own driving or vehicle records.

Customers needing same-day service for driving records only may visit any branch office.

Customers may obtain both driving and vehicle records at the Secretary of State Secondary Complex.  Same-day service is not available for requests that require microfilm searches.

The Secretary of State Secondary Complex can also process walk-in requests for another person's record by the next business day.  Walk-in requests are processed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
