Charter Boat License

Agency: Natural Resources

Please consult the Charter Boat Program website for more information.

Required State License(s):

Licensed with the Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division if the vessel operates on inland lakes, regardless of number of passengers, or if the vessel carries 6 passengers or less (not including captain and paid crew members);  517-284-6000.

Required to have a ship's pilot license with the Department of Natural Resources or Coast Guard, if the vessel is operated by other than the renter.

Other License(s):

If the vessel carries 7 or more passengers (excluding captain and paid crew members) and operates on the Great Lakes, should be licensed with the Coast Guard. Contact the Coast Guard at Regional Exam Center, at 888-427-5662, or visit online at www.uscg.mil/nmc.
